The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has condemned, the incident that led to the death of a final-year student of the institution, Okoli Chizoputam over allegations of stealing a phone.
The university, in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, on Tuesday, April 11, said preliminary investigation revealed that the student died of a mob action on the allegation that he stole a phone.
He described the incident as unfortunate, and that the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to the incident.
Olarewaju noted that the mob action was a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations and that the incident has been reported to the police who have commenced investigations.
