The president of the National Union of Teachers, Kaduna state chapter, alongside 2,192 primary school teachers, have been sacked by the state government for refusing to sit for the competency test conducted by the State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB).
The spokesperson of KADSUBEB, Hauwa Mohammed who issued a statement to this effect further revealed that 165 out of the 27,662 teachers that sat for the test in December 2021 have also been sacked for failing to pass the competence test.
She added that teachers who passed the exam will be included in Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programs to enhance their capacities to deliver quality teaching to pupils.
Reacting to the development, the state NUT president Ibrahim Dalhatu described the competence test and the sacking of the teachers as illegal. He stated that the union instructed the teachers not to sit for the test after learning the government only wanted to use it as a basis to sack workers in the ministry.
