Two serving corps members and four ex-corps members who worked as ad hoc staff in the March 18 gubernatorial and house assembly elections in Kogi state have been declared missing after gunmen attack six Hummer buses carrying officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The incident occurred around 2 am on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Obajana, and left several officials with gunshot wounds, including policemen and drivers.
According to one of the drivers who sustained a gunshot injury on his leg, they were on their way back to Lokoja from Abujor RAC with the results of the House of Assembly election, when they were attacked by the assailants.
The Kogi police command spokesperson, SP Williams Aya, who confirmed the attack in a statement, said 96 INEC staff members were rescued while the corps members are still missing.
Aya added that the Commissioner of Police has tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, to commence a thorough investigation with a view to apprehending the miscreants and bringing them to deserved justice.
