The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC), has decried the high level of sexual harassment and abuse of students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the country, calling it an “epidemic”.
Chairman of the ICPC, Bolaji Owasnoye, during a stakeholders summit held in Abuja, on Monday, Feb 28, on the review of the draft policy on “Sexual Harassment in Educational Institutions” warned custodians and stakeholders to desist from any form of sexual gratification that can cost them their careers and lifetime achievements.
According to Bolaji, the ICPC is empowered by law to prosecute anyone found guilty of sexual harassment, same way it had prosecuted an OAU professor, Richard Akindele, for demanding sex from a student.
He went on to explain that sexual harassment is an abuse of power, and the new project is aimed at improving the commission’s response to the rising cases of sexual offences.
