Some students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were recently apprehended by the school’s security forces for reading overnight at the institution. The affected students were from the faculties of Engineering, Sciences, and Arts.
The students were raided by security agencies and driven to their basement along with the Faculty of Education and directed to log in to the school’s portal to confirm their status. The angry students however protested the action, alleging that such a process could be used against them in the future.
In their defence, the security personnel said students have not been directed to resume physical academic activities, as they are meant to attend classes online.
They accused the students of not only breaching the orders of the school authorities but also violated the COVID-19 rule of social distancing and wearing of face mask.
The security personnel said students are free to come to the campus during the day, as some of them could have challenges accessing the internet, and could therefore use the institution’s wifi.
