Pandemonium rocks UNIBEN as gunmen kill final year student in hostel

• The University of Benin has been struck with tragedy following the demise of a final-year student
• Reports say the student was shot dead in his hostel when unknown gunmen invaded the premises
• Meanwhile, the Edo state police command said the deceased’s demise was cult-related, as he was shot dead by a rival cult

Edo, Benin – A University of Benin final-year student has been reportedly killed in his hostel on Monday, April 3.

As reported by the Leadership newspaper, the deceased, popularly known as ‘Mayor’, was shot dead at Hall 3 boys’ hostel when some suspected cultists invaded the hostel at about 9 PM on Monday.

It was further gathered that the incident transpired inside his room when the gunmen invaded the hostel.

According to This Day, Mayor was a final year student from the Department of public administration at the institution.

Other reports confirmed that Mayor’s remains were moved to the morgue at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Police confirm killing of UNIBEN final year student

While confirming the incident, the Edo State Police command identified the deceased as Obukobo Desmond Oghenerukhewe.

The police command spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, said the victim’s killing by some unknown gunmen was cult-related.

He revealed that Mayo was the leader of the Kegites Club in UNIBEN and was also a member of the Maphites’ secret cult group.

Nwabuzor revealed that Mayor was gunned down by the rival Black Axe cult group, also known as Aye.

As reported by Vanguard, Nwabuzor said:

“The DPO Ugbowo reported that he got a phone call from CSO of the university about the incident and when he they got there, a room in Hall 3, the saw the lifeless body and some items like voter’s card, school ID card and other items were found with him.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the victim was a member of mahpites while the killers are members of black axe Aye. The DPO will transfer the case to the SCID to continue investigation.”

Police Apprehend Local Chief Sponsoring Notorious Cult Gang in Delta State

In another development, a joint operation of the Delta state police command and the DSS has secured the arrest of Joseph Ologbo an alleged financier of the “Aro Bagger” cult.

Ologbo, who is known as a popular chief in Sapele, was arrested by the joint operational team at a hotel.

It was gathered that ammunition was recovered from his vehicle including the regalia of the “Aro Bagger” cult.
