A 500-level student of the Federal University Dutse has been arrested by the Department of State Security Security for a Twitter post directed at Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari. The student identified as 23-year-old Aminu Adamu Muhammad was arrested after he shared a post deemed defamatory on Twitter in June 2022.
Aminu had posted a picture of the first lady with a caption in Hausa that read; ”Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi”; translated as “the mother has got fatter by eating masses’ money.”
Angered by this, security operatives on the order of the first lady were said to have arrested Aminu from his school on November 8 at about 12:00 noon. Aminu was reportedly subjected to severe beating by the officers following his arrest.
Muhammed’s friends said he made the post because he was frustrated about the prolonged strike by universities across the country.
News of his arrest has since generated public condemnation with many describing the first lady as a “tyrant”.
