COEASU Strike Latest: The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) met at Federal College of Education, Kano, Kano State on Tuesday. 19th July, 2022 to assess the status of issues leading to the four week national warning strike action declared on 10th June, 2022 and decide the way forward. The meeting was attended by 57 Chapters comprising of delegates, former Presidents and members of the National Officers’ Council (NOC).
While empathetically acknowledging the appeal of critical stakeholders expecting the strike action to be suspended, NEC painstakingly submitted that the timing must be properly calculated based on the foregoing reservations in order to consolidate on the gains of the struggle.
Therefore, NEC unanimously resolved that the strike action should continue for the next three weeks within which the Union hopes that the foregoing reservations should have been addressed.
Earlier: Colleges of Education Commences One-Month Strike
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has declared a one-month strike action, effective Tuesday 14th of June. This was disclosed to newsmen in a communique signed by COEASU President, Dr. Smart Olugbeko and General Secretary, Dr. Ahmed Bazza Lawan, respectively.
According to the communique, the Union made the decision after a meeting at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, Delta State, on Friday, June 10, after assessing the level of the federal government’s response to its requests, following the expiration of an initial 21-day ultimatum.
It also added that the NEC will reconvene after the four weeks of strike action to re-assess the level of the Government’s commitment to the issues for an appropriate decision on the way forward.
The strike cuts across both state and federal colleges of education in the country.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to address the union’s demands else it will embark on industrial action.
This is contained in a statement issued by the President of the association, Dr. Smart Olugbeko, and the General-Secretary, Dr. Ahmed Bazza.
According to the statement, the strike notice begins on May 9, 2022, and if the government fails to do the needful within the period of the ultimatum, the union would declare appropriate industrial action.
The association further called on well-meaning Nigerians and stakeholders in the tertiary education sector to persuade the government to urgently take appropriate actions before the ultimatum lapses.
Earlier: COEASU Lecturers Threaten to Join ASUU’s Strike
Colleges of education lecturers under the aegis of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) have threatened to join their counterparts in universities on their ongoing industrial action over the non-payment of N15 billion revitalization funds.
The president of the union, Smart Olugbeko in a statement issued on Tuesday, Feb 15, said in the next few weeks, they would call the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to take necessary actions as permitted by the Trade Union Act if the government fails to honor their agreement.
Olugbeko listed some of the union’s grievances as the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement, problems faced from the imposition of IPPIS, and the payment of the N15 billion Revitalisation Fund for the development of Colleges of Education in Nigeria.
He condemned the federal government’s nonchalant attitude towards meeting its demand saying standards in colleges of education have drastically dropped, leaving both staff and students unmotivated as there are inadequate lecture rooms, ill-equipped laboratory, outdated library, and unconducive learning environment.
