Latest: Ghanian Varsity Offers $40,000 Scholarship to JAMB Highest Score Candidate, Ekene
Academic City College, a private university in Accra, Ghana, has offered scholarship worth $40,000 to Ekene Franklin Ezeunala, the candidate who scored 347 – the highest score – in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The College Senior Admissions Manager (Nigeria), Mrs Ogechi Ekpe, said on the sidelines of a workshop organised by the institution for schools and parents at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, at the weekend that the scholarship would cover tuition and boarding for the duration of his programme at the university.
“We have a full scholarship for Ekene. He was supposed to be here today (Friday) but we did not talk about the scholarship today because he was not here. We were to present a scholarship of $40,000 to the boy from year one till he graduates,” she said.
When asked how Ekene would be informed about the scholarship since he was not at the event, Mrs Ekpe said: “We were hoping he would be here today so our President can give him the award. The school is here now. We have to go there and see if we can either take him to Ghana or get our President to come again and give him the scholarship. The scholarship is for real. It is called the Presidential Scholarship so the school pays everything including the hostel fees.”
Ekene, who turns 15 today (Monday), is below 16, the minimum age benchmark to gain admission into his preferred choice – the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), also stipulates 16 years as the minimum age for candidates to take the examination during the admission year they apply. However many private varsities in Nigeria accept students who are less than 16.
Mrs. Ekpe said that Academic City College, which offers programmes in Engineering, Business, Communication Arts and Information Technology, accepts students from 15 years of age because it has system in place to monitor them.
She said: “That is why we want him there. Nigerian schools won’t give him admission but we will. We start admitting from 15 which is why we have a very visible Dean of Students’ Affairs. We make sure that they go to class, especially foreign students. You cannot be in the hostel during learning hours. Dean Ruth, that is her name, she normally goes round.
“There are parents that pay for their kids to be off campus but all international students must be on campus because we don’t want them to have immigration issues; we don’t want them to go off track and start doing drugs. We actually insist that in the first year at least they must be on campus.”
The Ghanaian institution became the second institution to announce a full scholarship to Ekene, who just completed his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Meiran Community Senior High School, Meiran, Lagos.
The first was Gregory University, Uturu in Abia State.

We’re Not to Be Blame if Candidate With JAMB Highest Score Doesn’t Get Admission
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that it should not be blamed that the University of Lagos’ age stipulation may disallow 2019 UTME top scorer, Ezeunala Franklin, from getting admitted.
The 15-year-old boy who scored 347 in the 2019 exercise had picked UNILAG as his first choice, which has 16 years as its minimum age for admission. The board said on Sunday that university regulations on admission were sacrosanct and could not be flouted by the board or by candidates.
It was noted in its weekly bulletin that while it was commendable that Franklin emerged the best, his “emergence should not be an excuse to flout the rules.”
The board said, “Universities all over the world define their rules on admissions and other requirements that would enable them give their best to the public. The board should not be blamed for the age stipulation as it stated explicitly in its integrated Brochure and Syllabus System.
“The responsibility of reading the instructions should not be that of the board but of the candidates and the public. “The board notes with dismay the pressure for it to shift the goalpost in the middle of the game by some sections of the public.
It is quite commendable that Franklin emerged the best but his emergence should not be an excuse to flout the rules as other institutions whose rules differ could give him a place.”
Earlier: Candidate With JAMB Highest Score Calls for Use of Local Languages in Teaching Maths
Franklin who scored 347 marks said in an interview with Daily Trust that students should learn mathematics by memorising steps and formula. The inability to learn by heart, he said tended to develop the fear of mathematics.
“Mathematics should be taught informally; we must put aside this formal method of teaching maths to make it appealing to many. In China, they learn maths using their language, and I think that has really helped them. There are a lot of geniuses, but mathematics becomes difficult to learn because of the technicality of the way it is being taught,” he said.
Commenting on his admission complication, Franklin expressed sadness over the age limit policy which denied him admission. He, however, said he would not hesitate to wait till next year when he attained 16 years, the traditional age for admission, to enroll in university.
Earlier: Why Candidate With 2019 JAMB Highest Score May Not Be Offered Admission By His Preferred School
15-year-old Ekene Franklin, who broke the record with the highest score of 347 of 400 in the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), with English (78), Mathematics (91), Physics (86) and Chemistry (92), may not get admission into his preferred University of Lagos (UNILAG), on account of his age.
There is a law that puts a limit on the age by which a student can start his/her academic journey in any public University in Nigeria. According to the law, the ‘standard’ and official age for admission into public University is Sixteen(16). The admission seeker is expected to be sixteen by the 1st of October in the year of admission if not all hope of securing admission will be a mirage.
There are many justifications for this Law both from academics and counsellors. The summary of which is that most of the under-16 brilliant students are not ’emotionally mature’ to withstand the multi-tasking that tertiary education demands. Another reason is that they are still impressionable and may be easily influenced by the antics of the adults in tertiary institutions.
For this reason, Franklin might not be offered admission for his dream course at the University of Lagos, come the beginning of a new session except he is 16 by then.
