Lagos State University (LASU) has commenced work-study scheme with ten students – to help them acquire work experience that will build their CVs even while still in the university.
The Lagos State University has again set the pace for other public universities in Nigeria by being one of the first institutions in the country to commence a Work-Study Scheme for her students.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, while receiving the ten pioneer students of the programme at her office, on Thursday, said it is her administration’s way of empowering the students with work experience right from the University.
She said, “I congratulate you for this opportunity that you have received from the university. Work-Study is very rare in universities now so you are lucky being among our pioneer students. The main purpose is for you to acquire work experience that will build your CV even while still in the university. I encourage you to make the best use of this opportunity.”
She also said the choice of fixing the students on ICT-related jobs is strategic: “ICT skills are the most in-demand skills worldwide. So we employed you to work with the Directorate of ICT to improve your skills.”
The Acting Director, Directorate of ICT, Dr. Toyin Enikuomehin, who is the project manager, thanked the Vice Chancellor to approving the project and praised the students, drawn from across different departments and faculties for their dedication to the project. “These students have surpassed my expectations so far. They are diligent, both with their studies and work. They have done about 3500 digitalisation content within a very short period”, he said.
The students commenced the work-study project about one week ago and will be on the programme for the next four (4) months in the first instance, getting monthly payment from the University. They were selected through the office of the President of the Students Union, and would work on the digitalisation of academic records of the university from 1984 to 2005.
Some of the students who spoke appreciated the VC for the uncommon opportunity and promised to maximise the opportunity to learn new skills and build their profiles.
The Project Supervisor, Mr. Olabode Akinrinmade; Staff Supervisor, Mrs. Akinyemi and President, LASUSU, Comrade Uthman Badmus joined the students in meeting with the VC.
