LASU Postgraduate Programmes, Requirements & Duration
GENERAL REQUIREMENT
The University requires five [5] CREDITS including English Language at Ordinary Level (GCE, WASC, SSCE, NECO and NABTEB) for ALL courses and credit in MATHEMATICS at Ordinary Level for SCIENCE, SOCIAL SCIENCES, MANAGEMENT SCIENCES and EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT courses.

- FACULTY OF ARTS
- Department of African Languages
- A. Yoruba Literature & Culture.
Candidates for admission into the degree of M.A. Yoruba Literature and Culture must possess any of the following qualifications from Lagos State University or from other institutions recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Yoruba NOT below Second Class Division.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Yoruba or Yoruba Education provided all core courses were taken and passed by such candidate;
- B. A. Yoruba Communication Arts;
- Candidates will be required to take a qualifying examination to determine their suitability for the programme.
Duration: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.
- Department of History & International Studies
- M. A. in History and Diplomacy:
Candidates seeking admission into the M. A. History and Diplomacy are required to possess at least:
- A good Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies of the Lagos State University not below the Second Class (Lower) Division, OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in History and its variants of any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University, OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in Humanities or Social Sciences adjudged as acceptable to the Department and the Senate of Lagos State University.
- Five credit passes including English, History or Government at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement.
- Candidates must take and pass a (written essay) qualifying examination administered by the University.
DURATION: M. A. History and Diplomacy runs for Four (4) Semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters (the final semester being fully devoted to writing the dissertation).
- Masters in International Relations and Strategic Studies (MIRSS):
Candidates seeking admission into the Master’s programme in International Relations and Strategic Studies (MIRSS) shall possess any of the following qualifications:
- A Second Class Lower Division Bachelor’s Degree from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University, OR
- A Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) or its equivalent with a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies of the Lagos State University, OR
- A Third Class Bachelors Degree from any University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University with a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies of the Lagos State University.
- Five Credit Passes including English at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement.
Candidates will be required to pass a qualifying examination administered by the University.
Duration: This programme runs for a minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.
- Post-Graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies (PGDIRSS):
Candidates seeking admission into the Post-Graduate Diploma programme in International Relations and Strategic Studies (PGDIRSS) are required to possess at least:
- A Bachelor’s degree in History and International Studies of the Lagos State University at the Third Class Division OR
- A Third Class Degree in History and its variants of any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University OR
- A Third Class Degree in Humanities or Social Sciences adjudged as acceptable to the Department and Senate of Lagos State University OR
- A Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) or its equivalent, or with Lower Credit with at least three years post-qualification experience.
- Five Credit Passes including English at the ‘O’ Level as basic requirement. Candidates will be required to pass a qualifying examination administered by the University.
DURATION: This programme runs for a minimum of four (4) Semesters.
- M.Phil. / Ph.D. History and Diplomacy:
Candidates seeking admission into the M.Phil / Ph.D. programme must possess M. A. in History and Diplomacy from the Lagos State University or any other recognized Universities with a CGPA of not less than 3.5.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
- Ph.D. History and Diplomacy:
Candidates applying for direct Ph.D. admission must possess a minimum cumulative GPA of not less than 4.0 at the M. A. level from the Department of History and International Studies of the Lagos State University. Holders of M. A. History from other Universities would be required to enroll for the M.Phil / Ph.D. programmes of the Department in the first instance.
DURATION: Minimum of six (6) Semesters and maximum of ten (10) Semesters.
- Department of Religions
- PGD Christian Religious Studies
An immersion programme for non-graduates of Religions to integrate them into studies for higher degrees in Christian Religious Studies.
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
- M.A Christian Religious Studies
Holders of first Degree in Christian Studies with at least Second Class Lower Division from Lagos State University or any other Universities recognized by the Senate.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
iii. M.Phil. /Ph.D. Christian Religious Studies
- Admission into the programme shall normally be given to candidates with M.A. Christian Studies.
- Candidates with Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
- All Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making on problem-solving potentials.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters.
- PGD Islamic Studies
An immersion programme for non-graduates of Religions to integrate them into studies for higher degrees in Islamic Studies
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
- M.A Islamic Studies
Holders of first Degree in Islamic Studies with at least Second Class Lower Division from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
- M.Phil./Ph.D. Islamic Studies
- Admission into the programme shall normally be given to candidates with M.A. Islamic Studies.
- Candidates with Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
- All Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making on problem solving potentials.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
vii. Ph.D. Islamic Studies
The programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A Islamic Studies and candidates with Master’s Degree of other recognized universities and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate or required to take courses as the Department may prescribe.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of ten (10) semesters.
- Department of English
- A. English
Candidates seeking admission into the Degree programme of M. A. English Language or M.A. Literature in English must possess:
Bachelor’s Degree in English Language, Linguistics or Literature in English NOT below Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
M.Phil/Ph.D.
- Candidates who posses Master Degree in English Language or literature in English from a recognized University which include Courses work and dissertation with CGPA not below 3.5.
- The candidates must posses at least five (5) credit passes at the ordinary level (G.C.E, WASC, and NECO) including English and Mathematics.
Duration: The minimum period of a full time study of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degree shall be for eight (8) semesters. Initial two (2) Semester for coursework leading to conversion to Ph.D. student are required to register every session to maintain their studentship.
Ph.D.
- Candidates must posses Master Degree in English Language or Literature in English from a recognized University, with cumulative Grade point Average (CGPA) of 4.0.
- All candidates shall be subjected to a selected process.
- Department of Foreign Languages
Master in Translation and Interpretation (MTI)
- M.T.I is a professional course. At least a Second Class Honours degree in French, Portuguese or Arabic from the Lagos State University or its equivalent from a recognised University. Graduates of Postgraduate Diploma from recognised institutions can also apply for the programme.
- Candidates may be required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of eight (8) semesters.
- M.A. Arabic Studies
All candidates seeking admission into this programme must have obtained a first honours degree in Arabic or Islamic Studies or a combined degree involving either or both of the disciplines. Candidates whose first degree involves only Islamic Studies could be admitted provided that.
They can satisfy the department that they have a satisfactory level of competence in Arabic and Literature; or to be specified by the Department
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
- M.Phil. /Ph.D. Arabic Studies
Candidates seeking admission into this programme shall be subject to fulfillment of the minimum requirements specified by the Postgraduate School (3.5 CGPA), as well as satisfactory performance in the compulsory courses.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
iii. Ph.D. Arabic Studies
Candidates must possess a good Master’s Degree in Arabic from a recognized University with a CGPA not below 4.0
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of (10) semesters.
- M.A. French
Candidates seeking admission into M.A French Programme must possess:
- Second Class Honours Degree in French or its equivalent from a recognized University.
- However, candidates are required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
- M.Phil./Ph.D. French
Candidates seeking admission into M.Phil/Ph.D. French Programme must possess:
- A Master’s Degree with a CGPA of at least 3.5 of 5.0 point scale
- However, candidates are required to satisfy all Departmental requirements in a qualifying examination before admission.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters.
- Ph.D. French
- Ph.D. is restricted to holders of an M.A. Degree in French from a recognized University with a CGPA not below 4.0
- M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree in French.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
- Department of Theatre Arts and Music
- POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) THEATRE ARTS
Candidates applying for the Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre Arts should have obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) with Third Class or Pass or Master of Arts (M.A) degree of the Lagos state university or any other university recongnised by the University Senate in areas other than Theatre, Performing, Dramatic, Creative, Media, Communication and Language Arts. Such degrees should be from the Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, Management Sciences and Communication Studies and related disciplines. Candidate with Higher National Diplomas in the areas listed above with requisite working experience are also eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass Postgraduate Qualifying Examination.
Duration: Minimum of two (2) semesters and maximum of four (4) semesters.
- A. THEATRE ARTS
Holders of First Degree in Theatre, Performing, Creative, Dramatic, Visual, or Media Arts or other related disciplines with at least Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University or other universities recongnised by the Senate of Lagos State University and holders of Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre Arts and related disciplines with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 shall be eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass the Postgraduate qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters.
- Phil /Ph.D THEATRE ARTS
Candidates for admission shall be holders of First Degree (Honours) Second Class Lower Division. Admission into the programme shall be open to candidates with M.A. Theatre Arts, Performing, Creative, Dramatic, Visual or Media Arts of Lagos State University or any other University recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University.
Duration: The programme is minimum of six [6] semesters.
Admission into the programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A. Theatre Arts programme of Lagos State University. Candidates with the Master’s degree of other Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate for the course shall be eligible for admission. Such candidates, however, may be required to take courses at lower levels as the Department may prescribe.
Candidate applying for the M. Phil/ PhD with background other than a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Performing, Creative, Media, Communication and Language Arts and Dramatic Arts shall be required to possess either a two year Diploma or one – year Postgraduate Diploma in any of the areas listed above. Prospective candidates are expected to present a proposal of study to the Department in addition to the qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
Ph.D. candidates are expected to specialize in the following fields of the Theatre and Cultural Studies:

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN MUSIC
(i) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) Music
Holders of First Degree in Music with Third Class Division or a pass of Lagos State University and other Universities recognised by the Senate of the Lagos State University, holders or First Degree in other fields of study with at least Second Class Lower Division and holders of Higher National Diploma (H.N.D) in music with Upper Credit to take and pass postgraduate qualifying examination.
(ii) M.A. MUSIC
Holders of First Degree in Music with at least Second Class Lower Division of Lagos State University and other Universities recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University and holders of Postgraduate Diploma in Music with CGPA of 3.0 shall be eligible for admission. In addition, prospective candidates are also expected to take and pass postgraduate qualifying examination.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six [6] semesters.
(iii) M.Phil/Ph.D DEGREE IN MUSIC
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.
The M.Phil/PhD programme is 2 semesters minimum and maximum of 4 semesters. Admission to the programme shall be open to candidates with M.A. Music.
(iii) Ph.D DEGREE IN MUSIC
Admission into the programme is open to candidates with 4.0 CGPA in M.A. Music programme of Lagos State University. Candidates with the Master’s degree of other Universities recognised by the Senate of Lagos State University and whose transcripts are adjudged to be adequate for the course shall be eligible for admission. Such candidates, however, may be required to take courses at lower levels as the Department may prescribe.
M.Phil/Ph.D candidate adjudged as having satisfied the Departmental Board of Examiners in the M.Phil./Ph.D programme can be advised to proceed to Ph.D and the Registration made retroactive.
Duration: Minimum of six (6) semesters and maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
Areas of Specialization:
Ph.D. candidates for the Music programme shall specialize in one of the following areas:
- Ethnomusicology /African music
- Music composition
- Music performance and Management
- Music production and management
- Music Education
- Musicology
DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY
M.A. PHILOSOPHY
Candidates for admission into the M. A. Philosophy should normally possess at least:
- A good honours degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division (2.2) in Philosophy of the Department of Philosophy, Lagos State University, or any Department of Philosophy of a university in Nigeria or elsewhere in the world, recognized by the Senate of the university.
- In exceptional circumstances, graduates of other disciplines may be considered for admission. The department may recommend remedial courses in philosophy for such students where some deficiencies are noticed.
- Candidates must satisfy the O’ Level admission requirements as spelt out by the Postgraduate School.
- All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.
DURATION:The programme shall run for a minimum of two (2)semesters
- FACULTY OF EDUCATION
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree of Lagos State University or other Universities recognized by the Senate.
- Candidates with Higher National Diploma (not below Lower Credit) from recognized polytechnics or equivalents.
- c. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) at not more than two (2) sittings or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate in related subjects.
Duration: Minimum of 2 semesters and maximum of 4 semesters.
- Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology
- M.Ed Counselling Psychology
Candidates seeking admission into each of the programmes are required to possess
- At least a Second Class Lower Division in Education of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
- Postgraduate Diploma Degree in Education in addition to a First Degree in other disciplines, such as Arts, Social Science and Sciences, from the Lagos State University and other similar institution recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
- Third class honours in Education plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education at a credit level.
- d. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) at not more than two (2) sittings or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate or N.C.E. in related subjects.
Duration: Minimum of four (4) semesters and maximum of six (6) semesters.
M.Phil/Ph.D Counseling Psychology
- Candidate with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University will be admitted for M.Phil./Ph.D. and later be converted to full Ph.D. if he/she meets the requirements
- Candidate with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University will be admitted into full Ph.D. programme.
In addition to the above, candidates must posses any of:
- Five Credit passes at O’ level or Teacher’s Grade II certificate or N.C.E. including English Language
- LASU Foundation Certificate.
- A pass in Mathematics is acceptable for the programmes. Meanwhile evidence of NYSC discharge certificate or exemption/ exclusion certificate is a must for every candidate.
- M.Ed Educational Psychology
Candidates seeking admission into each of the programmes are required to possess
- At least a Second Class Lower Division first degree in Education of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by Senate of the Lagos State University.
- Postgraduate Diploma in education in addition to a first degree in other disciplines, such as Arts, Social Science and Sciences, from the Lagos State University and other similar institution recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
- Third class honours in Education plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education at a credit level.
- d. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) at not more than two (2) sittings or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate or N.C.E. in related subjects.
Duration: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.
M.Phil./Ph.D. Educational Psychology
- Candidate with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted for M.Phil./Ph.D. and later be converted to full Ph.D. if he/she meets with the requirements
- Candidate with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted into full Ph.D. programme.
In addition to the above, candidates must posses any of:
- Five Credit passes at O’ level or Teacher Grade II certificate including English Language or N.C.E.
- LASU Foundation Certificate.

Candidates seeking admission into each of the programmes are required to possess

- Holder of Postgraduate Diploma Degree in education in addition to a First Degree in other disciplines, such as Arts, Social Science and Sciences, from the Lagos State University and other similar institution recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
- Third class honours in Education plus Postgraduate Diploma in Education at a credit level.
- d. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) at not more than two (2) sittings or Grade II Teacher’s Certificate or N.C.E. in related subjects.
Duration: Minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters.
M.Phil/Ph.D Early Childhood Education
- Candidate with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization)from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted for M.Phil./Ph.D. and later be converted to full Ph.D. if he/she meets with the requirements
- Candidate with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted into full Ph.D. programme.
In addition to the above, candidates must possess any of:
- Five Credit passes at O’ level or Teachers Grade II certificate including English Language or N.C.E.

M.Phil/Ph.D. Sociology of Education
- Candidate with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University will be admitted for M.Phil./Ph.D. and later be converted to full Ph.D. if he/she meets with the requirements
- Candidate with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted into full Ph.D. programme.

- Candidate with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA in Masters of Education (in the area of specialization) from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University will be admitted into full Ph.D. programme.
In addition to the above, candidates must posses any of:

- M.Ed Health Education
Candidates seeking admission into this programme are required to possess
- At least a Second Class Lower Division in Physical & Health Education/Health Education of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by Senate of Lagos State University.
- b. All candidates must possess at least five (5) credits at the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) including English Language at not more than two (2) sittings.
Duration: Four (4) Semesters.
- M.Phil/Ph.D Health Education
Candidates seeking admission into this programme are required to possess:
- A. First Class Honours in Physical and health Education/Health Education of Lagos State University for direct admission into Ph.D. or
- An M.Ed in Physical and Health Education/Health Education of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by Senate of the Lagos State University with a CGPA of 3.5 for admission into M.Phil/Ph.D or CGPA of 4.0 for direct admission into Ph.D.
- At least five (5) credit passes in the Ordinary Level (G.C.E, WASC, NECO) including English at not more than two sittings.
Duration: Minimum of 6 semesters
iii. M.Ed Exercise Physiology
Candidates seeking admission into this programme are required to possess

An applicant for the Master of Philosophy shall be:

The LL.M degree of the Lagos State University will run for four [4] academic semester and shall be by course-work and dissertation. Examinations shall be administered at the end of the course-work while the dissertation shall be examined by a panel of examiners constituted for that purpose.

The M.Phil/Ph.D programme is open to candidate(s) with
- A Bachelor degree of Lagos State University or of any other University with not less than second class lower division and a master’s degree with not less than 3.5 CGPA in any of the following courses: Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Human Resource and Industrial Relations, Psychology, Sociology, Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, Political Science and Law.
- Candidate must satisfy the department in selection process.
- Candidate must satisfy all other conditions as stated in the general regulation governing post-graduate degree in the Lagos State University.
Order to convert to the Ph.D. programme, candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Must score at least a weighted average score of 60 per cent in all the courses taken
- Must pass a minimum of 30 units out of a maximum of 36 units
- Must write and present a proposal at a departmental seminar
- Must pass an oral conversion examination.
Any student who fails to meet the conversion criteria will forfeit his/her studentship because M.Phil./Ph.D. is not a certificate awarding programme.
Department of Public Administration
- Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGD) Full Time and Part Time
Bachelor’s Degree not lower than Third Class from Lagos State University or any other Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.

iii. Master in Public Administration [MPA]
The admission requirements for Master in Public Administration programme for the 2021/2022 academic session are as follows:
(a) Five (5) Credits at ‘O’ Level including Mathematics and English Language at not more than two (2) sittings
(b) Graduate from the Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of the Lagos State University with not less than Third (3rd) Class Degree

Master of Science (MSc) in Project Management
Admission Requirements
To qualify for admission into the MSc Project Management Programme, the candidate must possess or meet a combination of the following:
- Graduate of Lagos State University and holder of any other Degree recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University not lower than Second Class lower division in the following fields: Management Technology, Project Management Technology, Transport Management Technology, Management Sciences, Economics, Geography and Planning, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Information and Communication Technology, Educational Management, Science and Technology Education, Social Science Education and other related courses.
- Five O’level credits, including English language and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
The applicant should demonstrate proficiency in computer applications.
- D. Human Resources Management
- An applicant must have a good first degree of Lagos State University or of any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University with at least second class lower division, in any of the following disciplines: Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Business Administration, Public Administration and Law.
- The applicant must also have Master’s degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management or Human Resources & Industrial Relations (with course work component) from Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University with a minimum of CGPA 4.0.
- Eligible candidates shall be required to attend an Oral Examination which shall be conducted by the Department.
- Candidate will also submit a short proposal on proposed area of research.
Programme Duration: The programme duration for the Full-Time stream is a minimum of Six (6) semesters and a maximum of Ten (10) semesters. But for the Part-Time stream, it is a minimum of Ten (10) semesters and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters.

- Candidates applying for the PGD in Accounting should have a Third Class in Business related courses such as Accounting, Accounting Education, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Business Administration, Insurance, Industrial Relation & Personnel Management.
- Candidates with a second class lower degree from other field such as Engineering, Sciences, etc. are also qualified.

- A M.Sc. in Banking and Finance Management or Business Administration with a minimum of 3.5 CGPA provided the candidate had B.Sc. in Accounting from a recognized institution.
Note: It is noteworthy that M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is not a certificate awarding programme. To be qualified for conversion into Ph.D programme, candidate(s) must offer and pass a minimum of 36 units (18 units of compulsory courses, 12 unit of elective courses and 6 units of seminars) with a weighted average score of not less than 60 percent. Also, the candidate(s) must sit for oral conversion examination and score more than 60 percent.
Ph.D Accounting

Graduates from other disciplines related to Biochemistry will be considered on their individual merit.
- A Biochemistry graduate (B.Sc.) of Lagos State University and other Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University with a pass or third class degree, but that has successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Biochemistry with a CGPA of 3.50 and above.
iii. M.Phil. /Ph.D. in Biochemistry
Admission into the M.Phil. /Ph.D. in Biochemistry programme shall normally be opened to:
- First Degree holders whose CGPA is not below 3.5 in the One Calendar year of M.Sc. Biochemistry of Lagos State University.
- Candidates who possess a Master’s Degree of CGPA of 3.5 from other Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
Iv. Ph.D. in Biochemistry
Eligibility shall be any of the following:
- A weighted average of 60% and above obtained from the M.Sc. Biochemistry degree of LASU or any other University recognized by the Senate of LASU.

Admission into the M.Phil. /Ph.D. in Physics programme shall normally be opened to:
- First Degree holders whose CGPA is not below 3.5 in the One Calendar year of M.Sc. Physics of Lagos State University.
- Candidates who possess a Master’s Degree of CGPA of 3.5 from other Universities recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.

iii. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree in Physics
Admission into the Doctor of Philosophy in Physics programme shall normally be opened to:
- Candidates who have attained at least a 60% level of pass, OR a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.0 in the Master of Science M.Sc. Degree in Physics programme of Lagos State University AND who have made satisfactory progress in their projects.
- Candidates with the Master of Science Degree in Physics, Degree of other recognized Universities, AND whose performance is adjudged to be adequate for the course.
However such candidates may be required to take courses as the Department may prescribe.
Duration
The Master of Science Degree in Physics programme will run for ONE (1) Academic calendar, (two semesters) in the case of full time participation whereas part time participation will be for TWO (2) Academic Sessions (four semesters).
For the Master of Philosophy in Physics programme students are expected to a minimum spend ONE (1) academic session and maximum of TWO (2) Academic Sessions (four semesters).
The Doctor of Philosophy in Physics programme shall run for a minimum of SIX (6) Semesters AND maximum of TEN (10) Semesters.
- Department of Computer Science
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science
The criteria for admission into the PGD in Computer Sciences Programme will be as follows, provided that the candidate has five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Physics and any two science related subjects:
- Candidates with Bachelor degree or its equivalent in computer sciences, computer education, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum of a third class division.

- Masters of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Science
The criteria for admission into the M.Sc in Computer Sciences Programme will be as follows, provided that the candidate has five credit passes including two science related subjects:
- Candidates with Bachelor degree in Computer Science of the Lagos State University or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum of a second class lower division.
- Candidates with Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science of the Lagos State University or its equivalent from a recognized university with a minimum CGPA of 3.0
Duration: The M.Sc. programme runs for a minimum of 4 semesters and maximum of 6 semesters
iii. Doctor of Philosophy (PH.D.) in Computer Science
The criteria for admission into the Ph.D. in Computer Sciences Programme will be as follows, provided that the candidate has five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Physics and any two science related subjects. Note all the conditions below must be satisfied.
- Candidate must have B.Sc. degree in Computer Sciences or PGD in Computer Sciences from Lagos State University or a recognized university with a minimum of 3.0 CGPA
- Candidate with M.sc in Computer Sciences of the Lagos State University with a minimum of 4.0 CGPA and thesis score not lower than 60% (B)
- Candidate must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity, effective decision making and problem solving potentials.
Duration: The Ph.D programme runs for a minimum of 6 semesters and maximum of 8 semesters
- Department of Chemistry
- Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry
Candidates are required to possess:
- A graduate of Lagos State University or other recognized University: i.e any First Degree from the Lagos State University and other recognized institution in one of the Biological, and Biochemical Sciences.(For example Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Food Science, Biology, Botany and Food Technology)..
- A person who holds other qualifications approved by Senate, i.e the AIMLT or HND or its equivalent Upper Credit from recognized Polytechnics.
- In exceptional circumstances, any other person whose educational qualifications and competence for the course of study proposed has been approved by Senate.
- Candidate shall be required to undergo a selection test and in accordance to all the prevailing university regulations governing postgraduate degree.
- M.Sc. Chemistry
- The course shall be open for an admission to Honors Chemistry graduates from Lagos State University and other Universities/Institutions recognized by the Senate, who have obtained not less than a Second Class lower division.
- A Master Degree programme in Chemistry shall last for a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 6 semesters and each student shall renew his/her registration at the beginning of each session.
- The programme shall run on a full time basis and the candidates may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.
iii. M.Phil./Ph.D in Chemistry
Applicants for admission into the programme must possess:
- Master Degree in Chemistry who has attained a total weight average of 55.0-59% (CGPA 3.50-3.99) pass from LASU. Or any other university recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University.
- i. The Ph.D. programme shall be open only to candidates having Master degree of the Lagos State University Ojo, or any other approved University.
- Master degree holder who has attained a total weighted average of 60.0% (GP 4.0) pass in the relevant written examinations of the three semesters M.Sc. programme in Chemistry from Lagos State University (LASU and also obtained satisfactory level of performance in other compulsory courses of the M.Sc. programme.
- In spite of the M.Sc. courses, 4.0 CGPA graduates from other Universities may be required to audit some courses on the suggestion of the supervisor and ratified by the departmental postgraduate committee.
- Candidates shall be required in accordance with University regulations to carry out meaningful research and submit a thesis on his/her research for the award of Ph.D degree at the end of at least six semesters. Please note that all Postgraduate programmes require all applicants to possess a credit pass in English Language at the ordinary level.

- Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics
The programme is designed for candidates with weak First Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics Education and other Mathematics based courses.
- M.Sc Mathematics
A good bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Engineering, Physics and Computer Sciences or Postgraduate Diploma (with a minimum of 3.5).

iii. Ph.D

Ph.D Zoology and Environmental Biology
- Candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics and two other relevant science subjects at ‘O’ Level;

The part-time Diploma (PGD) programme shall be on part-time basis and run for a minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters.
- All candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at ‘0’ Level.
- A Bachelor of science (B.Sc.) Degree in Microbiology, Food Technology or any other appropriate course in biological Sciences from any University recognized by the senate of LASU
- Holders of HND in relevant programme from approved institutions with a minimum of Upper Credit may also be considered for admission.
- Higher National Diploma or Certificate (HND or HNC) in science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology Option) or Food Technology.
- Associateship of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology (AIMLT) Certificate.
- Final Diploma in science Laboratory Technology (Microbiology Option) or the relevant discipline.

M.Sc. MICROBIOLOGY
The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Microbiology shall be on a full time basis and run for a minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of five (5) semester.
- Candidates must have five credit passes including English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics subject at ‘O’ Level.
- Candidates with Bachelor’s degree from approved University must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a CGPA of 3.0/5.0 for an academic programme.

- Candidates with Bachelor’s degree from any other recognized University must obtain a minimum of second class lower division with a minimum of second class lower division with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/5.0

- Candidates must have the university minimum requirement for a B.Sc. degree in Political Science including credit pass in Mathematics and English Language at the 0/level.
- Candidates with M.Sc. Political Science with CGPA weighted average not less than 4.0 is required for Ph.D. and not less than 3.50 is required for M.Phil. /Ph.D., apart from other pre-requisites spelt out in the University regulations for postgraduate studies.
- A brief satisfactory statement of research in the intended area of research and an oral Ph.Ds. qualification examination by a multi-disciplinary panel constituted by the Department.
Application for the admission to Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.Ds.] in Political Science must possess a Master of Science [M.Sc.] in Political Science with CGPA weighted average not less than 4.0, apart from other pre-requites spelt out in the University regulations for postgraduate studies.
Also admission requirements include a brief satisfactory statement of research in the intended area of research and an oral Ph.D. qualification examination by a multi-disciplinary panel constituted by the department.
Duration: Minimum of 6 Semesters and Maximum of 10 Semesters
For extension beyond the specified maximum period, a special permission of the Postgraduate Board shall be required.
- Department of Psychology
M.SC PSYCHOLOGY DEGREE [M.SC PSY]
In addition to satisfying the Postgraduate admission requirements, the Department requires that:
- Candidates for admission should normally possess at least a minimum of second class lower Honors Degree in Psychology;
- Candidates from other disciplines [e.g. Environmental Sciences, Guidance & Counselling, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Law and Maritime] may be admitted provided such candidates agree in writing to take remedial courses as the department my deem necessary. Not more than twenty percent [20%] of candidates from other disciplines shall make up the total number of the admitted students.
- All candidates for admission must sit for an entrance examination/interview and pass it at determined mark as the Department may prescribe from time to time.
M.Phil./Ph.D Psychology
- Admission to the M.Phil.Ph.D conversion programme is open to graduates of Lagos State University or of other approved Universities, who have attained a specified level of performance in the M.Sc. Psychology Degree Programme. The candidate must have had a weighted average Cumulative Grade Point Average [CGPA] not less than 3.5 to 3.99 will be required to commence on M.Phi. programme. The student will also be required to take at least 12 course units from the 800/900 level courses as may be directed by the department.
- For the M.Phil/Ph.D candidates, the minimum duration for these programme shall be two semesters after the registration and a maximum duration of four semester.
- Students for M.Phil/Ph.D. conversion programme shall undertake a conversion examination and must obtain a total weighted Cumulative Grade Point Average [CGPA] not lower than 3.5 and above in the 12 units’ courses and an oral examination of proposed research work.
Ph.D. Psychology
- Candidates for admission to the programme shall be:
- Those initially registered for the M.Sc or M.Phi./Ph.D conversion programme of the department and have obtained a total weighted Cumulative Grade Point Average [CGPA] not lower than 4.0 in the course examinations and project at the Lagos State University.
OR
- Candidates who possess the Master of Philosophy [M.Phil] degree in psychology of an approved University recognized by Senate. Candidates admitted to the programme will be required, on the recommendation of the Department, to take certain courses at the 800/900 levels up to a maximum of 12 units from the candidate’s area of specialization.
- Candidates are required to defend their research proposals before an examination panel as may be recommended by the department and give departmental seminars on their Ph.D research.
MASTER IN CRIMINOLOGY, SECURITY AND LEGAL PSYCHOLOGY [MCSLP]
In addition to satisfying the Postgraduate admission requirements, the Department requires that:
- Candidates for admission should normally possess any of the following background and experience; Military, Para-military, security/Intelligence, Legal and /or Judiciary;
- Candidates for admission should normally possess at least a minimum of second class lower Honors Degree in Psychology/ a minimum of Upper credit from approved Polytechnic from any other discipline;
- All candidates for admission must sit for an entrance written and / or oral examination and pass such at determined grade as the Department may prescribe from time to time.
- Candidates with Higher National Diploma degree [or their equivalents within the Military/Security educational structures] of not less than Upper Credit in any discipline are also eligible.
- Candidates from Military, Para-military, Security/Intelligence communities whose ranks are below that of a Major/Superintendent in the Military/Paramilitary [or its equivalent in the other Security Organizations a NOT eligible.
- Non-Military/Security/Intelligence personnel are also eligible but shall NOT be more than thirty percent [30%] of the admitted students. Post qualifications[s] experience, exposure and position in the place of work are very important.
- Years of experience of candidates are of utmost important. Hence candidates who are hightly experienced by the educational qualification formally recognized within the Military/Security/Judicial sectors may also be admitted. Candidates with the above qualifications must have worked for not less than fifteen [15] years and should not carry a rank below a Major in the Army or its equivalent in other Paramilitary Organizations,
- The decision of the Admissions Select Committee [ASC] of the Department of Psychology, Lagos State University in respect of any candidate who applied for the M.Sc CSL Psychology shall be deemed final. Decisions of the ASC shall be communicated by the Head Department of Psychology to the Dean Postgraduate School, LASU.
- SCHOOL OF TRANSPORT
Master of Transport Planning
- Candidates for Masters in Transport Planning programme of the School of Transport, must possess (5) O” level Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any three other subjects from Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Arts in addition to the following:
- B.Sc. Transport or related field of studies not below Second Class Lower 2.2 from Lagos State University or any other Institution recognized by LASU Senate in Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Arts.
- Considerations may also be given to holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) not below lower credit who in addition MUST possess the Postgraduate Diploma in Planning Studies or related discipline from LASU or other institutions recognized by LASU Senate in Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Sciences, Engineering and Arts etc. or full membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).
Duration: The programme runs for Two (2) Academic Sessions. (Four 4 Semester)
M.SC Transport
MPHIL/PH.D IN TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS
To qualify for admission into the MPhil/PhD programme in Transport and Logistics, the candidate must possess or meet a combination of the following:

DURATION
- For MPhil/Ph.D. candidates, the programme shall normally last for not less than two semesters from the date of first registration in the case of full-time registration and four semesters in the case of part-time registration
- A period of study and research originally approved for the MPhil/Ph.D. may, following the MPhil/Ph.D. assessment and conversion be accepted as part of the period of study required for the PhD degree.
PH.D IN TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS
To qualify for admission into the PhD programme in Transport and Logistics, the candidate must possess or meet a combination of the following:

DURATION
The programme shall normally last between four and eight semesters from the date of first registration as a full time candidate. The programme shall last not less than eight semesters for part-time registration.
- LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION (LASUSOC)
Post Graduate Diploma in Communication Studies (FULL TIME)
Applicants with first Degree not lower than 2nd class lower in any field of studies from an approved university.
Applicant with a 3rdclass or Pass degree in communication and related disciplines
Higher national diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit. However, holders of HND are not eligible for M.Sc. admission after PGD.
Five credits O’ level including English Language, Mathematics, and Literature in English or credit in Literature-in-English in lieu of credit in mathematics for graduates in the Arts and Humanities and credit in Physics or Chemistry in lieu of credit in Literature in English for graduates in the Sciences.
Duration: The duration is two (2) semesters.
Masters in Communication Studies (MCS) (PART TIME)
A good first degree not below Third Class or Pass with two years working experience in Communication related industries.
Higher National Diploma not below Lower Credit with at least three (3) years cognate experience
Candidates with any of the following professions qualifications (APCON, NIPR, CAM, NIMARK, DIPLOMA, etc.)
Five credits in O’ level including English Language (Credit in MATHEMATICS IS NOT REQUIRED, for admission into MCS Programme)
Duration: The duration is six (6) semesters.
Masters of Science in Communication Studies (MSc) (FULL TIME)
A good first degree not below second class lower in mass communication or related discipline from any approved university.
Post graduate diploma of this school or any approved communication institute with a cumulative grade point average of not below 3.0 (50%) provided the candidate possess a University First degree.
Five credits O’ level including English Language, Mathematics, and Literature in English for BSc Mass Communication graduates, or credit in Literature-in-English and a pass in mathematics for B.A Communication graduates and credit in Physics or Chemistry in lieu of credit in Literature in English for graduates in the Sciences.
Duration: The duration is four (4) semesters.
M.Phil. /Ph.D. Communication Studies (FULL TIME)
Candidate seeking admission for the MPhil/PhD must hold a Master’s degree (Communication Studies) with not less than 3.5 points on a 5 point scale or from another University recognised by LASU with a master’s degree with not less than 3.5 point on a 5 point scale.
Such a candidate when admitted shall take prescribed courses to be converted to the Ph.D. programme and must pass with a minimum of 4 points on a 5 point scale.
Candidate must also hold a bachelor’s degree (B.A or B.Sc.) in any area of communication studies with a minimum of second lower degree or a first degree in any other area of study with a Postgraduate Diploma (Communication Studies) of LASUSOC or from institutions recognised by Lagos State University.

- Candidates in other related courses recognized by the Lagos State University Senate may be required to satisfy the Departmental selection process.

- M.Phil/Ph.D. in Physiology
This programmes is open to:
- Master degree holder in Physiology who has attained a total weighted average of 55.0-59.9% (GP. 3.50 – 3.99) pass from LASU or other University recognized by LASU Senate.
iii. Ph.D. in Physiology
The programme is open to candidates with:
- M.Phil. in Physiology
- M.Sc. in Physiology with a GPA of 4.0 and above from Lagos State University and any other University recognized by LASU Senate.
Duration: Six (6) semesters
- Department of Medical Biochemistry
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
To be eligible for admission, candidates must be holders of
- B.Sc. Degree in one of the following disciplines: Chemistry, Botany, Zoology,Microbiology, Applied Chemistry or any other related field with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) Pass.
- MB, BS, MB, Ch., or BDS degree
- FIML/FIST and HND with at least five years post-qualification experience may be considered.
- Candidates may be required to undergo a selection process that involves written examination and/or interview.

- Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Biochemistry of Lagos State University or any other University recognized by the Senate of Lagos State University. - Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Biochemistry from Lagos State University with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.50 could also be admissible into the programme.
iii. Candidates may be required to undergo a selection process that involves written examination/oral interview.

iii. M.Phil/Ph.D
An applicant for admission to M.Phil/Ph.D in Medical Biochemistry must possess M.Sc. Degree in Medical Biochemistry or Biochemistry from this University or any other University recognized by Senate.
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
The Ph.D degree programme is open to candidate holding M.Phil degree or equivalent in Biochemistry or Medical Biochemistry of Lagos State University or any other university recognized by Senate.
