The Federal House of Representatives has rejected a bill sponsored by Sergius Ogun (PDP, Ogun), that seeks to bar children of public office holders from schooling abroad without the approval of the Minister of Education.
The bill which had first been introduced at the 8th Assembly was also rejected by lawmakers at the time.
The bill also requires that the officers must provide proof of ability to pay the school fees of his /her wards before commencing the process, including a bank statement of account, salary payslip, declaration of assets form, amongst others.
A fine of N1 million or three years imprisonment for breach of the law was also provided for in the bill.
Sergius had also sponsored a bill to make it mandatory for public officials to get medical care in Nigerian hospitals, which was equally rejected, with the lawmakers saying it was against their fundamental rights.
