The Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Ondo state chapter has condemned the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, on the introduction of N20,000 reparation fees as a condition for the reopening of the school for academic activities.
NANS JCC in a statement issued by its Chairman, Comrade Omotoso Surprise, and Secretary, Comrade Akinola Elijah Temitope, described the levy as unfavourable, anti-student, and as a burdensome tax on parents still battling with non-payment of salaries and other gratuities.
According to the statement, the N20,000 fee was too extreme as the ad-hoc panel set up by the university to assess the level of damages caused had established that what was destroyed during the protest wasn’t up to N10,000,000. It added that the actions of a few should not be used to punish innocent students.
The student body further urged all students and the entire University community to keep calm as they were working hard to address the issue.
Recall that AAUA management had on Thursday announced that all students of the institution would be required to swear an oath and pay N20,000 as reparations for school properties damaged during a violent protest in November 2021.
