Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has refuted the wrong impression making the rounds that millipedes invaded the hostels of the campus and also sacked some students, saying it is mere fake news .
The report, which has the headline, “Panic as a battalion of millipedes sack FUOYE students, reads in part: “A student of Federal University of Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) has lamented about the invasion of battalion of millipedes into the campus which has lasted for weeks.”

But in a swift reaction, the Management clarified that the harmless insects are actually centipedes not millipedes. FUOYE’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr. Paul Ogidi, described the report as mere figment of the writer’s imagination as its contents are far from the truth.

Debunking the fake news, Mr. Ogidi said.: “The report that millipedes sacked our students is a fake news. and the story that the situation became a major security issue amongst the students of the University is also fake.

“The incident of some insects spreading in some parts of the premises of the campus is as a result of the rainy season and when the Management noticed it just a week ago, it has immediately fumigated the University campus properly. So, the news that the incident has happened weeks ago is fake and an handiwork of some lazy and mischievous bloggers.

Also reacting, the Chief Medical Director of FUOYE’s Director of HealthServices, Dr. Olawale Musibau , said:”The multiple of centipedes on our campus is not limited to this environment rather every other place beyond Ekiti communities. The multiple millipedes can only be attributed to effects of climate change which is a global phenomenon. However, management already swung into action by fumigating the environment and carried out necessary sanitation.”

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) Administration, Prof. Tajudeen Bolanle Opoola, said: “There I is currently no cause for alarm over the alleged invasion by the millipedes. Prior to the rainy season, we had fumigated the premises of the campus. Once we noticed the centipedes, we had quickly arranged for the fumigation of the campus premises.

We have swiftly moved into action and killed all the centipedes, although it gave a strange odour and that has been taken care of by removing all the dead insects. We are also making plans to kill the green grasses gradually which is creating a friendly environment for the centipedes . We are also been careful with frequent fumigating the environment because of the health hazards the chemicals can cause. “
